DJ IV
IV’s early history was spent practicing being an excellent turntablist, watching VHS tapes of his idols, collecting records, and working tediously to perfect more scratch techniques to add to his arsenal. Establishing a name for himself through DJ battles, which generated a buzz around Halifax, IV quickly gathered the interest of promoters and local MCs. This led to him co-founding the NOAffiliation Drum & Bass collective with Sammy D and Ming, the Merciless of DJ Olympics fame. Being the new guy on the scene, placed in a downtown environment, IV rapidly adopted a party-rocking format that nightclub patrons and club owners respected. This approach also instilled fear in other DJs when it came to competitions.
Creating a name associated with skills, IV gained recognition from more established artists. In 2003, he became the backbone for the local legendary group Universal Soul, which made him familiar with being on the road and playing bigger stages outside his hometown. This move parlayed him into becoming the DJ for Juno award-winning recording artist Classified and the artists on his HalfLife Records label. With momentum gaining traction through award nominations and DJ battle victories, IV ventured into creating his brand by building a recording studio. Through his IV League Studios imprint, he provided a platform for younger artists, allowing him to produce their work and promote events that helped build the foundation for those artists who continue to make waves on international stages today.
In 2024, IV celebrates his 25th year behind a set of turntables, whether performing around the globe with Classified, Quake Matthews, Universal Soul, or subbing in as the DJ for artists like Maestro Fresh Wes, Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan, Shaquille O’Neil, Choclair, and RA The Rugged Man. He continues to hold numerous DJ residencies across Atlantic Canada, as well as artist bookings at the iconic downtown Halifax nightclub The Toothy Moose. IV remains active in working with and recording artists, creating online content for them, and facilitating youth-based programs and graphic design. He humbly gives back to the community that has embraced him for over two and a half decades.
IV has embraced a role behind the scenes to help curate unique events and larger-scale opportunities with promoters, partners, and venues to showcase local talent. Looking to the future in 2024, whether on stage, in the studio, through mentorship, lessons, conversations, consulting, or partnerships with other organizations, IV’s mission stays the same. He aims to share knowledge through education and inspire a younger generation of curious musicians to follow their passions. Much like he was welcomed 25 years ago, IV is an open book, ready to aid and motivate aspiring artists to become the next Ambassadors of the East Coast’s music scene.
